Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge Technology in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay system

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in implementing replay systems.

Video review technology are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Athletes will gain the ability to contest particular calls from the official, mirroring the protocol currently in operation at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This move arrives only a season following the AELTC introduced ELC, which brought an end to the 147-year role of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Players will not be permitted to challenge the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine specific decisions, such as:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot touched an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there will be no limit on the number of challenges a player can request.

Practical Application

An illustrative case took place in Indian Wells last week, where a top player used the review system against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a difficult call for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire watched a video and ruled Draper was guilty of hindrance, granting the point to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. It has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Further Updates

A further innovation at The Championships this year involves the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where spectators have sometimes been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.

In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have further announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
