Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for several hours when dozens of them drifted across the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the aviation facility.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why criminals use a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that these practices become unprofitable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
Regional Security Context
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Parallel situations in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
