Social Media Content Creators Driving Unofficial Trade for Unlicensed Weight-Loss Drug

A shadow market for unapproved slimming drugs is propelled by TikTok fitness influencers and sellers on communication apps, based on new investigations.

Investigational Drug Acquiring Popularity Online

The experimental drug, which is still in research studies, is being advertised by social media influencers for its alleged weight-reducing effects. Viewers are urged to message these profiles privately for supplier links, while also receiving discount codes.

Active Commerce on Social Networks

Additionally, a flourishing market exists on Telegram, where communities with thousands of members share comparison photos, administration instructions and claims of next-day British shipping. Vendors market the substance there before redirecting customers to WhatsApp for purchases.

Learning About Retatrutide

Retatrutide is an investigational injection developed by US drugmaker Eli Lilly. The drug affects three gut hormones – glucagon-like peptide-1, glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide and glucagon. Preliminary studies suggest it could help patients reduce up to a quarter of their body weight. Referred to as the “triple G”, the substance is being promoted digitally as the next Ozempic.

Medical Experts Express Worries

However, doctors and pharmacists have cautions that the distribution of what is still an unapproved medication in the United Kingdom is worrisome and could lead to users administering substances of unknown origin.

Several experts said the demand for retatrutide could be linked to the increasing cost of approved slimming treatments such as Mounjaro.

Regulatory Status and Implementation

Selling retatrutide on TikTok or messaging apps is illegal in the UK, as it is an unapproved medication that cannot be promoted or supplied for human use under the British medical regulations.

Some content creators try to circumvent the rules by referring to the drug as a “research chemical” or citing it as “not for human consumption”. The substance is not a controlled drug, but promotion and distribution can still violate pharmaceutical, marketing, and consumer regulations, potentially leading to penalties, prosecution or prison.

Service Response and Material Removal

Based on the social media company, the service has taken down violative content and prohibited associated hashtags and search suggestions. The company said it was dedicated to keeping the service secure and allocating resources in enhancing compliance measures.

Online Marketplace Activities

Investigations also found groups with up to nine thousand members selling retatrutide using Telegram's built-in search feature, which functions like a online catalog. Typing “retatrutide” immediately brings up channels with thousands of users, populated with photos of weight loss, glowing reviews and step-by-step instructions for mixing or administering at residence.

After minutes of joining one community, a vendor shared contact information, where most transactions take place. The seller provided an instruction manual and promised delivery within two days. When questioned whether the product was genuine, one vendor responded: “You can’t be sure.” Another provided a photo of a supposed testing documentation. None asked about weight, medical conditions or past usage.

Item Details and Costs

Inside these groups, messages show dark colored parcels with Royal Mail labels, claiming to include fresh supplies. One message read: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”

Buyers can select between dry substance containers, prepared at home with purified liquid, or ready-to-use injectors typically priced at 160 pounds for 20mg. When questioned how long a injector should be used, vendors give contradictory responses ranging from a few weeks to “depends on your body”.

Platform Oversight and Safety Actions

A representative for Telegram said it actively moderated harmful content on its service including material that promoted the “misuse of controlled medications”. The organization added that it removed “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

Medical Professional Cautions

“People are administering substances they can’t verify. Although the science behind this drug is sound, these digital products may not contain what they claim,” stated Jason Murphy, the head of pharmacy at a pharmacy service.

Dr Crystal Wyllie of Asda Online Doctor connected the increase in demand to recent cost increases for approved weight-loss medications such as Mounjaro. “With prices rising, individuals are using social media. But counterfeit treatments are highly risky. You can’t be certain what’s inside or whether the conditions they were produced in was clean,” she explained.

Her staff has previously seen individuals harmed by self-injection from unverified sources. “We understand the disappointment, but purchasing from messaging apps or WhatsApp is taking chances with your health,” said Wyllie. “These materials could be contaminated or incorrectly dosed.”

Producer Statement

A representative from the pharmaceutical company stated retatrutide was in third stage research studies and had not been evaluated or authorized by any regulatory agency globally. “Consequently at this point no one can market [it] for human use,” they explained, adding that any item “falsely representing itself as a Lilly experimental substance not yet authorized … may expose users to possibly serious medical dangers”.
