Early Saturday morning, accounts surfaced of significant explosions rocking Tehran, amid statements from Israeli officials that it had carried out a preemptive strike.
Powerful Explosions and Plumes of Smoke Witnessed in the Heart of Tehran
As per eyewitness accounts, two powerful explosions were audible in Tehran on Saturday. Simultaneously, two plumes of dense smoke were observed billowing over central and eastern districts of the Iranian capital.
“The type of explosions indicates that this is a strike involving missiles,” a media outlet reported, though it did not initially provide further details.
Background: Escalating Strains and Prior Developments
The incident takes place against a backdrop of severely escalated strains in the region. Key developments leading up to this strike involve:
- American Naval Deployment: A massive build-up of US naval forces in the Middle East, including the repositioning of aircraft carriers.
- Diplomatic Negotiations: Latest discussions between the US and Iranian officials on Tehran's atomic program ended inconclusively, with indications of further discussions scheduled.
- Official Rhetoric: Before the strike, a senior US official had described Iran as “the leading state sponsor of terrorism” and issued threats regarding its weapons development.
- Ultimatum: Allegedly, a deadline of roughly two weeks had been presented to Iran to resolve the atomic standoff or face severe consequences.
Iranian Response
Reacting to prior accusations, Iranian authorities had charged the United States of spreading “falsehoods” about its missiles programme. Officials rejected claims about missile development and protest deaths as baseless.
These developments remains fast-moving, with additional reports expected as events unfold.
