EU Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States on five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were at the heart of efforts to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and Europe.
