Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a combined operation on an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the IS group, according to the UK's MoD.

The facility, pinpointed through surveillance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just above Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a number of approach shafts down to the facility... early reports indicate the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the strike late on Saturday and every plane involved made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as Daesh - established militant control over large swathes of Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This operation shows British leadership, and commitment to work closely with our allies, to eliminate any revival of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey stated.

UK warplanes have conducted patrols over Syria to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of IS after its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank every member of the UK armed forces who took part in this operation for their professionalism and their courage," the Defence Secretary added. "Including them were thousands of British troops on duty over the holidays. This mission, to eliminate terrorist threats who endanger our safety, highlights how UK forces are ready to step up, throughout the year, protecting the UK domestically and influential overseas."

In December, the United States armed forces conducted what it described as a "massive strike" against IS targets in the country, subsequent to an assault killed two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations estimates IS still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in both countries.
